Agentic commerce was one of the main themes of Shopify Editions Spring ’26, but it describes a broader shift in how people shop online. Instead of the customer opening the online store, comparing products and going through the checkout themselves, this process can be partially or completely taken over by an AI agent in ChatGPT, Copilot, Gemini or a similar tool.
The Shopify Editions Spring '26 overview covers the wider release. This article focuses on how agentic commerce works in practice and what merchants should prepare.
What is agentic commerce?
In classic e-commerce, the customer browses the catalogue, makes a decision and buys. In agentic commerce, an AI agent can take over part of that journey — based on a request such as "find me running shoes under CZK 3,000 that will arrive by Friday", it searches available stores, compares offers and, where supported, can suggest or complete the purchase. Structured data is essential for the agent; storefront usability and brand presentation still matter when the customer visits the store.
Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP)
Universal Commerce Protocol is an open standard that Shopify developed together with Google and which has the support of companies such as Amazon, Meta, Microsoft, Salesforce, Stripe, Etsy, Target or Visa. It solves a fundamental problem: without a common standard, each AI platform (ChatGPT, Copilot, Gemini) would require its own integration with the cart and checkout of each store separately.
UCP structures communication between an AI agent and a store across four areas:
The agent identifies itself, and the store applies the relevant permissions and limits.
The agent searches for products — either across all Shopify stores or in the catalog of a specific online store.
The agent builds the cart and, where supported, can complete the purchase for the customer.
Delivery, claims and return information can be exchanged through APIs and webhooks.
Shopify Catalog and Agentic Storefronts in action
Agentic Storefronts are active by default for eligible stores. The Allow Shopify to manage for me setting gives supported channels access to product data through Shopify Catalog and enables direct checkout where a channel supports it. Merchants can turn off automatic management and control individual channels manually.
Shopify Catalog provides structured product data to AI channels, but it does not replace every other discovery method. AI tools can also find products through web crawling and indexing or other product feeds. Purchase journeys differ too: ChatGPT is currently a discovery channel that sends customers to the store's checkout, while some other supported channels can offer direct checkout inside the conversation.
Real numbers from the first months
According to Shopify data for the first quarter of 2026 (year-over-year comparison to Q1 2025), the impact of AI channels looks like this:
| Metric | Value | Comparison |
|---|---|---|
| Conversion ratio | roughly 50% higher | versus organic search |
| Average order value | 14% higher | versus organic search |
| Visits from AI assistants | more than 8x growth | year-on-year, Q1 2026 |
| Orders from AI channels | almost 13x growth | year-on-year, Q1 2026 |
| Access to product detail | more than 50% of visits | for organic search around 20% |
The last line is the most important from a practical point of view: the AI agent sends the customer directly to a specific product, not to the homepage or to a category. Thus, the product detail itself must contain everything necessary to make a decision — a complete description, availability, shipping and return conditions.
For specific brands, Shopify reports, for example, 3.2% of total revenue from AI channels (Omnilux, March 2026) or 20x year-over-year revenue growth from these channels (Cozy Earth). According to Shopify, search built on the structured Shopify Catalog should convert roughly twice as well as results from scraped data.
The numbers need to be taken with a grain of salt — this is data published by Shopify itself, not independent research, and the high growth multiple comes from a low base. But they show a consistent direction across categories.
What you need to do for AI agents to find you
AI agents rely primarily on structured data. Alongside a strong storefront experience, the priorities should therefore include:
- Complete and accurate product data — names, descriptions, variants, images and categories without gaps and inconsistencies
- Current availability — warehouse, delivery times and delivery options must correspond to reality, the agent compares deals precisely according to the reliability of this data
- Clear policies — shipping, returns, privacy and terms completed in Shopify admin
- Review Agentic Storefronts — confirm store eligibility, default channel settings and whether direct checkout is available
This is closely intertwined with the concept that has recently been called Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) — an SEO equivalent focused on visibility in AI answers and recommendations, not just in classic search results.
Risks and open questions
Agentic commerce is still an early topic and it is worth approaching it objectively, not as an automatic guarantee of higher sales:
- Customer adoption is still developing, and public data is not yet sufficient to estimate a typical revenue share for an individual store
- Data protection and security issues remain open when authorizing payments on behalf of the customer
- Not every type of product or business model lends itself equally well to AI-mediated purchasing — for products where personal testing or advice is decisive, the role of the agent will be more complementary
- Merchants have less control over brand presentation inside AI interfaces; after a customer reaches the store, visual identity, trust and usability still matter
Do you need Shopify Plus for this?
Not necessarily. Shopify describes Agentic Storefronts in terms of store and channel eligibility rather than as a general Plus benefit. ChatGPT, for example, requires a store that sells to US customers, eligible products and completed store policies. Google AI Mode and Gemini are in early access and are not available to every store.
Complete product data can improve how AI channels understand and rank an offer, but it does not guarantee visibility. Relevance, popularity, customer engagement and each channel's own ranking logic also matter.
Frequently asked questions
What is agentic commerce?
It is a shopping journey mediated by an AI agent. The agent can search a catalogue, build a cart and, where supported, complete a purchase. For Shopify, ChatGPT currently acts primarily as a product discovery channel and sends the customer to the store's checkout.
Does Agentic Storefronts require Shopify Plus?
Shopify describes availability by store eligibility and the individual AI channel, not as a general feature reserved for Plus. Check the current requirements of the channel you want to use.
How do I enable Agentic Storefronts?
They are active by default for eligible stores. In Sales channels > Agentic, you can keep Shopify's automatic management or turn it off and manage Shopify Catalog access and direct checkout for supported channels individually.
Does agentic commerce replace classic SEO?
It does not replace, rather complements. Data structure, product descriptions and technical SEO fundamentals remain important even for AI agents to correctly understand and recommend the store.
Are customers converting better from AI channels?
According to Shopify data for Q1 2026, visits from AI assistants convert roughly 50% better than visits from organic search and have a 14% higher average order value. Visits from these channels grew more than eight times year-on-year, orders almost thirteen times.
